Quarterback Ryan Bowne of Notre Dame High said he will walk on at UCLA next season, declining offers to attend Ivy League schools Pennsylvania and Yale.
Bowne (6-feet, 185 pounds), who passed for 3,673 yards and 39 touchdowns in two seasons as a starter at Notre Dame, last month visited both Ivy League schools, which do not offer scholarships but provide athletes with financial aid.
“It just came down to I wanted to stay around here and play at a big-time school,” Bowne said.
Track and Field
Sharon Deshane has replaced Casey Jones as the boys’ coach at Quartz Hill High.
Jones was the girls’ coach from 1989-94 before taking over the boys’ program last year. He also coached the Rebels’ boys’ cross-country team from 1988-95, but resigned both positions because he had run himself “ragged.”
Deshane was Quartz Hill’s girls’ track coach last year. Kelly Marsh, the girls’ cross-country coach, has taken over that post.
No replacement has been hired for the boys’ cross-country position.
