U.S. to Appeal Gasoline Ruling: Washington opposes the World Trade Organization finding that it unfairly discriminates against gasoline imports from Venezuela and Brazil. The WTO ruled last month that the United States holds foreign refiners to a higher cleanliness standard for gasoline than it does domestic firms, and demanded that it treat both equally. The U.S. said it will present the details of its appeal within 10 days. Year-old U.S. rules require reductions in some gasoline components to reduce exhaust pollution. Foreign firms must meet the standards immediately; U.S. companies can adopt them gradually. The WTO ruling, which is seen as an important test of the trade agency’s enforcement powers, has become an issue in the U.S. presidential campaign.
