For a city of more than 90,000 residents, Santa Monica has an inadequate amount of recreation space and existing parks and park facilities need work, a city survey found.
Most residents are frequent users of Santa Monica’s parks and open spaces--favored places being the beach and Third Street Promenade, according to findings in the first phase of the Recreation and Parks Master Plan. The conclusions are to be unveiled tonight.
Of the more than 3,000 residents contacted, 91% said improving parks and facilities is either “very important” or “important.” Most respondents said they would like to see swimming pools repaired, children’s play areas and playing fields renovated, bicycle paths added and park safety improved.
To finance the upgrades, 84% said they would be willing to pay a user fee and 57% said they would support a tax increase.
