Council to Consider Requests for Grants

The Moorpark City Council tonight will start the long process of winnowing down more than 19 requests for grants aimed at helping local children, teenagers, the elderly and the poor.
Every year, the council distributes federal Community Development Block Grants earmarked for community improvements of depressed areas as well as urgent health and safety needs.
This year, the city has about $244,000, in addition to another $40,000 left from last year’s allotment.
But the 19 requests for money total more than $965,000, so the council will have to decide which projects will receive grants. “
In the past, the city has used block grant money to pay for street improvements, to help finance on-going services provided by Catholic Charities to Moorpark’s poor, and for long-term care of the elderly in the city.
