. . . At hearings in Newport Beach on a proposal to lease California coastal waters to the petroleum industry, Orange County leaders urged Gov. George Deukmejian to ban offshore oil and gas exploration.
“We understand there is a need for oil exploration,” Irvine Mayor David Baker said, “but we’re not sure it needs to happen at the cost of our scenic coast.”
