BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : Cuban Defector Sharp Against Braves

In his first test against major league hitters, Cuban defector Livan Hernandez, 21, threw three scoreless innings for the Florida Marlins in a 9-1 loss to the world champion Atlanta Braves at Melbourne, Fla. . . . Reliever Bobby Thigpen, the White Sox career leader in saves, agreed to a minor league contract with Chicago. Thigpen, 32, had four consecutive seasons of 30 or more saves with the White Sox from 1988-91. He set the major league record of 57 in 1990. . . . Bill Swift, 9-3 with the Colorado Rockies last season, threw 35 pitches in batting practice as he continued to come back from off-season shoulder surgery.
