MATT BLASDEL
Defender
Santa Margarita, Sr.
A first team All-Sea View League selection, Blasdel contributed to 10 Santa Margarita shutouts and helped lead the Eagles to the Division III semifinals. Blasdel has signed to play at Gonzaga next year.
WADE FRASER
Midfielder
El Toro, Jr.
A first team All-Sea View League selection for the second consecutive year, Fraser scored eight goals and had eight assists. Fraser was also named first team All-Southern Section Division III.
STEPHEN GONZALEZ
Midfielder
Orange, Jr.
A first-team All-Century League selection, Gonzalez scored five goals and had nine assists for the Panthers. One of his goals, in the final minutes of a quarterfinal playoff victory, kept the Panthers’ season alive.
CHON KANTIKOVIT
Midfielder
Santa Margarita, Sr.
Though he missed five games with an injured knee, Kantikovit scored 12 goals and had eight assists. Kantikovit, a second-team Times’ pick last year, shined in the playoffs, scoring four of the Eagles’ seven goals.
JUSTIN KERR
Forward
Newport Harbor, Sr.
The only repeat Times’ first team player, Kerr had 26 goals and 12 assists despite playing with a sprained ankle. Kerr, who helped lead Newport to the Division III quarterfinals, will play at Princeton next year.
JESSE LOPEZ
Defender
Santa Ana, Sr.
As a sweeper, Lopez contributed to Santa Ana’s 17 shutouts and scored four goals himself. A four-year starter and three-time captain, was the Golden West MVP last year and first team all-league this season.
ALBERT MENDEZ
Forward
Santiago, Jr.
The Garden Grove League’s MVP, Mendez scored an amazing 52 goals to lead the county. Mendez, who also had 16 assists, led the Cavaliers to a 20-2-1 record and the No. 2 spot in the Division III playoffs.
BRIAN PIESNER
Forward
Santa Margarita, Sr.
A second-team Times’ pick last year, the left-footed Piesner scored 15 goals and had 13 assists for the Eagles this season. Piesner, the Sea View League’s MVP, has signed to play at Rutgers next year.
MARC RODIECK
Forward
Esperanza, Sr.
The co-MVP of the Sunset League, Rodieck scored 29 goals and had 10 assists. Rodieck, who will play next at Chapman or Southern California College, had two goals in a playoff victory over Redlands.
CHRIS WILSON
Defender
Huntington Beach, Sr.
Wilson became the first Oiler in 15 years to be named the Sunset League’s defensive MVP. As a sweeper, he scored a goal and had three assists. He will play next year at UC Santa Barbara or Cal.
ALDO ZUNIGA
Goalkeeper
Orange, Sr.
The Century League MVP, Zuniga recorded 14 shutouts while leading Orange to the Division II title. Zuniga saved three penalty kicks to preserve a quarterfinal victory over Santa Barbara and scored a penalty kick himself.
KINO OAXACA
Coach of the Year
Esperanza
The Aztecs were only 1-9 during the summer, but Oaxaca led Esperanza to a share of the Division I title and a 25-2-3 record. The Southern Section title is Oaxaca’s third in last nine years.
The Second Team
Todd Abdalla, Goalkeeper
Trabuco Hills, Sr.
A second-team Times’ selection for the second consecutive year, Abdalla was also named MVP of the South Coast League.
Mike Berman, Defender
Capistrano Valley, Sr.
A first-team All-South Coast League pick, Berman led the Cougars to the South Coast League title and the Division I quarterfinals.
Erik Bautista, Midfielder
Santiago, Sr.
A first-team All-Garden Grove League selection, Bautista had 16 goals and 17 assists for the league champion Cavaliers.
Brandon Clewett, Defender
Esperanza, Sr.
A first-team All-Sunset League selection, Clewett scored five goals and had 12 assists for Division I co-champion Esperanza.
Ron Davis, Forward
El Toro, Jr.
A first-team All-Sea View League pick, Davis scored 14 goals and had nine assists for the Sea View League-champion Chargers.
Jeremy Ellis, Defender
Newport Harbor, Sr.
A first-team All-Sea View League selection, Ellis did the dirty work for the Sailors, who had their best season in four years.
Jeff Jensen, Midfielder
Woodbridge, Jr.
The Irvine Tournament’s Most Valuable Player, Jensen made first team All-Sea View League and scored six goals and had 11 assists.
Todd Marcus, Midfielder
Edison, Sr.
Honored by the Times’ for a second year, Marcus was a first-team All-Sunset League pick who scored nine goals with six assists.
Juan Reyes, Forward
Santa Ana, Jr.
Reyes scored 13 goals and had eight assists for the Saints, who reached the quarterfinals of the Division I playoffs.
Manuel Tapia, Forward
Westminster, Sr.
Named the Golden West League’s offensive player of the year, Tapia was also selected to the South squad of the senior all-star game.
Joey Vazquez, Forward
Fountain Valley, Sr.
A Times’ first-team pick last year and a two-time All Sunset League pick, Vazquez will play his soccer next year at Cal State Fullerton.
