Petition Drive Targets Widening of Highway

A citizens group that opposes the proposed widening of the Imperial Highway will meet tonight to discuss a petition drive to block the construction.
The group, OUCH, whose full name is the Organization of Unified and Concerned Homeowners, needs to collect 5,000 signatures by September to put the issue before voters, spokesman George Mendoza said Wednesday. The group will meet at 8 p.m. in the Community Room of the Yorba Linda Library, 18181 Imperial Highway.
City officials announced Tuesday that they will hold their own study session on the plan April 23. At that time, residents may examine proposed designs for the highway and hear the results of a survey of local sentiment on the issue.
The project, if approved, would expand the highway from one lane in each direction to two or three lanes each in some locations. Members of OUCH fear the widening would increase traffic and require unsightly sound walls. Mayor John M. Gullixson said those concerns are unjustified because the proposed changes are minor.
