‘A Little Princess’
Director Alfredo Cuaron’s 1995 enchanting fantasy introduces us to Sara Crewe (10-year-old Liesel Matthews) in Simla, India, in 1914, where her Indian nanny teaches her that all women and girls are princesses. Eventually Sara’s wealthy father goes off to serve in the Great War and Sara is sent a school for girls, where she clashes with the haughty head mistress. When her father is listed as missing in action, overnight Sara is turned from a cosseted, indulged pet into an overworked drudge, forced to scrub floors and exist on bitter gruel (HBO Sunday at 9 a.m. and 6:15 p.m.; Wednesday at 1:45 p.m.).
