Film Industry Urges China to Keep Piracy Vow: U.S. Motion Picture Assn. of America Chairman Jack Valenti urged China to redeem its pledges to halt copyright theft. “Please, China, redeem the commitments that you made in the treaty signed last February,” Valenti said. “We are not asking for any more than has aready been agreed to.” This week’s talks in Beijing will review progress made on the copyright issue since last year, when China agreed to crack down on violators, thus averting a trade war. Western diplomats have said they expect little substantial progress at the talks, which follow meetings in Beijing last week, when visiting U.S. trade negotiator Lee Sands addressed U.S. grievances over China’s continued copyright violations.
