Top Prep Baseball Tournament to Open

One of prep baseball’s most prestigious tournaments, the Dole National Classic, begins today at six fields in Orange County.
There are 16 teams in the tournament. Four are local--Mater Dei, the county’s top-ranked team, El Dorado, Tustin and Esperanza. There are several nationally ranked teams entered--Key West (Fla.), Miami Westminster Christian, Granada Hills Kennedy, Mountain View St. Francis and Lakeside (Calif.) El Capitan.
El Dorado will face Key West at 7 p.m. today at Amerige Park. Other first-round games involving county teams: Pennsauken (N.J.) Bishop Eustace Prep is at Mater Dei at 2 p.m.; Westminster Christian plays Tustin at 7 p.m. in Glover Stadium; and Vancouver (Wash.) Hudson Bay is at Esperanza at 11 a.m.
The last five tournament winners, including 1995 champion Germantown (Tenn.), have gone on to win the mythical national title.
