SAN CLEMENTE — A 48-year-old man remained in serious but stable condition Wednesday after he was robbed of his wallet and shot in the face, sheriff’s officials said.
James Wengert was walking in a parking structure in the 600 block of South El Camino Real about 6:45 a.m. when a robber approached him and demanded his wallet, Lt. Tom Garner said.
Wengert turned over the wallet. But before the robber ran, he fired once, striking Wengert’s cheek, Garner said.
“He had the wallet and shot the victim for no reason,” Garner said.
Investigators described the attacker as African American, with short black hair and a beard. He is about 5 feet 9, 170 pounds, Garner said.
Anyone with information call the sheriff’s watch commander at (714) 834-6490.
