San Gabriel Valley : STREET MAKE-OVER

Pasadena’s Playhouse District, an often overlooked stretch between trendy Old Pasadena and upscale South Lake Avenue, is about to get a make-over.
This week, the City Council voted unanimously to spend $1.3 million to bring a little romance back to the area with new benches, landscaping, trees and Victorian lighting.
It is part of a more than $3-million face-lift for the area considered to be the city’s cultural and intellectual heart, said Marsha Rood, a city development official.
“The Playhouse District in my opinion has been overlooked for some time,” said Joel Sheldon, owner of Vromans bookstore. “This is a unique opportunity to bring together cultural and commercial institutions.”
