To promote interracial understanding at her school, student Simone Wiggins founded Costa Mesa High School’s first African-American Studies Club, also the first organization of its type in the Newport-Mesa Unified School District.
Though only 2.3% of the student population at Costa Mesa High is African American, that is the largest concentration at a district high school.
The group has sponsored several events, including readings of African poetry and an African dance show.
Principal Andrew Hernandez said he is encouraged any time a student takes on such a project because it fosters a positive atmosphere on the campus. “This is the type of thing where everyone benefits,” he said.
