Julie Andrews, “The Best of Julie Andrews,” Rhino. (** 1/2)
The highlights here are Andrews’ performances in her various Broadway and Hollywood roles, from “My Fair Lady” and “Camelot” to “The Sound of Music” and “Mary Poppins.” While devoted fans will probably cherish it, the music loses some of its charm when separated from the context of the shows. It’s more engaging, for instance, to hear “I Could Have Danced All Night” or “Wouldn’t It Be Loverly” alongside “Rain in Spain” than “We’ll Gather Lilacs in the Spring” (from the musical “Perchance to Dream”). Also note: Because of licensing restrictions, the 19-song set doesn’t include anything from some of Andrews’ later vehicles, including “Victor/Victoria.”
