Bat Caves and Earth Day

* Re “Earth Day Activists Shut Out at Ahmanson Ranch,” April 22.
I don’t get it. Why would an anthropologist (Chester King), a Chumash hereditary chief (Charlie Cooke) and other Native Americans (Dolphin Dancers) draw attention to the location of a worship site? This seems unwise at best. It sounds as though the Bat Caves are better left alone, and not made vulnerable to possible vandalism.
When I read the announcement in The Times’ April 19 issue, under “Special Events Planned for Earth Day,” I called the number listed for information. I got a recorded message about how to protest a development. There was no mention about the intention to trespass without permission. All things considered, I’m glad I didn’t attend.
