LIMA, Peru — A bus plunged over a cliff in a mountainous area of southern Peru, killing at least 30 passengers and injuring 20, police said Sunday.
Officials said the bus crashed into a 1,000-foot abyss late Saturday night during its journey between the cities of Tacna, on Peru’s southern border with Chile, and Puno, a city in the Andean highlands near the Bolivian border.
Police could not say what caused the accident, although witnesses indicated there was a mechanical failure. The passengers were mainly local merchants.
