Telethon Nets $14,500 for 4th of July Parade

The city’s first telethon on cable station HBTV-3 raised $14,500 for the annual Fourth of July parade, city officials said.
Deputy City Administrator Richard Barnard declared the June 8 telethon, which featured local entertainers, celebrity guests and city officials, a success.
The parade is financed through contributions made by residents, business owners and corporations. Producing it costs about $175,000.
The telethon, Barnard said, helped promote a new program, Parade 2000, which encourages people to support the parade through annual membership fees. The goal is to sign up 2,000 members by the year 2000.
