Jury Scofflaws

Re “County Gets Tough With Jury Duty Scofflaws,” June 26:

Good for L.A. County. It is extremely troubling that so many people refuse to accept such a fundamental civic responsibility by evading jury duty. Like voting, jury duty is the type of social obligation that must be embraced if we are to advance our community.

In a city where so many people continue to be highly opinionated about certain celebrated jury verdicts, it would be extraordinarily hypocritical if any of these people evaded jury service. Such people have not earned the right to criticize jury verdicts because they, shamefully, shirk their responsibility to the community at large.
