Stan Oftelie, chief executive officer and treasurer of the Orange County Transportation Authority, has been named Cypress College’s alumnus of the year. He was honored at the college’s commencement ceremonies May 31.
Oftelie graduated from Cypress College in 1968, then worked as a reporter for the Orange County Register and the Los Angeles Times.
He served as chief of staff and executive assistant to Orange County Supervisor Ralph B. Clark from 1976 to 1983, and later joined the Orange County Transportation Commission. He was appointed to his current position in 1991.
In a speech at the commencement ceremony, Oftelie praised community colleges for the role they play. “Cypress College gives people special opportunities to succeed and, in many cases, second chances in their lives,” he said.
