BRAZIL : Fugitive in Killing of Amazon Activist Held

Police have arrested the rancher who ordered the 1988 slaying of Chico Mendes, the Amazon activist whose murder drew worldwide attention to the exploitation of the rain forest. Darli Alves da Silva had been on the run since February 1993. That was when he escaped from a state penitentiary in the far western state of Acre with his son, Darci Alves Pereira, who was convicted of being the triggerman in the slaying and is still a fugitive.
