Cox Unit to Buy $500 Million of Lucent Equipment: Cox Communications Inc. said its Cox California PCS unit will use the Lucent Technology Inc. equipment in a new wireless network that Cox is building to provide personal communication services in the Southland. PCS, known as the next generation of cellular communications, will provide users with wireless voice and paging services over small, lightweight telephones. Irvine-based Cox California is an affiliate of Sprint Spectrum, a joint venture that plans to provide nationwide wireless services based on a new digital technology, code-division multiple-access. Cox said its wireless system will be the first to integrate existing cable infrastructure into the network.
