SANTA FE, N.M. — The decomposed body of a British army major missing for four months was found hidden under tree branches and rocks in a remote area of eastern New Mexico, the FBI said Wednesday.
Maj. David Nichols appeared to have been shot twice in the head, said FBI agent Ron Dick.
Dick said two convicts who escaped from an Alabama prison on May 21 and went on a cross-country journey before being recaptured in July were the only suspects.
Nichols, who was in the United States for training, was last seen alive May 26 buying gasoline in the town of Raton in northeastern New Mexico. His rental car was found dumped in a lake in Indiana, Dick said.
