Chrysler Corp. said its U.S. sales of cars and trucks last month were up 19% over the same period a year ago, breaking a 24-year-old company record for October. Once again, Highland Park, Mich.-based Chrysler’s sales were led by strong demand for its pickups, minivans and sport-utility vehicles. Sales for those vehicles were up 22%, based on the daily sales rate. Car sales were also strong--up 11% over October 1995. Chrysler sold 205,393 vehicles, compared with 166,823 in the year-ago period and well over the previous record of 176,339 set in 1972.
