DMV Gets Complaints on Voter Sign-Up

SACRAMENTO — The state Department of Motor Vehicles said Thursday it has received some complaints from Californians who believed they had signed up to vote under the new motor-voter law and now find they aren’t registered.
The agency said it has handled 1.6 million voter transactions since the law took effect last year, but has received fewer than 200 inquiries from people whose names do not appear on voter rolls.
DMV spokesman Evan Nossoff said most of the complaints have involved people who moved from one county to another but failed to file a re-registration form.
Officials expect complaints to increase when some Californians who changed counties show up at the polls and learn they are not registered.
