Santa Paula 21, Santa Clara 19--The Cardinal defense stopped Vince Ines on a two-point conversion attempt with 35 seconds left to play and Santa Paula held off the Saints in a Frontier League game at Santa Paula High.
Santa Clara quarterback Willie Zavala left the game with five minutes left after a roughing the passer penalty. Backup Danny Acosta relieved and connected with Gabe Chavez on a 48-yard pass play to the Santa Clara 20 yard line. Four plays later, Acosta scored on a five-yard run, but the Saints (0-8, 0-2) couldn’t convert.
Trailing 13-7 at the start of the fourth quarter, the Cardinals (4-4, 1-2) got rushing touchdowns by Freddy Sanchez and Jorge Torres to take a 21-13 lead.
Sanchez ended up with 91 yards and two touchdowns in 15 carries. Torres had 94 yards and a touchdown in 7 carries.
