Blaze Causes $155,000 in Damage to Garage, Attic and Five Cars

A fire that began early Friday in the garage of an upscale home caused $155,000 damage, including five burned cars, authorities said.
No one was injured, and Fountain Valley firefighter Bryan McKay rescued a cat from the blaze. The cat was treated by paramedics for smoke inhalation and taken to a veterinarian, Battalion Chief Charles Burney said.
Three occupants, a couple who owns the home and a mother-in-law, were alerted by a smoke detector and escaped. Two of their three cats also apparently ran out before the blaze became fully involved, firefighters said.
About 2:15 a.m., firefighters were summoned to the house in the 8600 block of Palermo Drive, where they saw fire and smoke billowing from the attached garage, Burney said.
“There were a lot of embers that were falling on the adjacent homes, which did have wood-shake roofs,” Burney said. “We were very concerned about that.”
The fire, which was confined to the one home, damaged the garage and portions of the attic and roof. Thirty-one firefighters took about 15 minutes to control the blaze, Burney said.
Investigators have not yet determined a cause, Burney said.
