Slaying Suspect Freed for Lack of Evidence

A 60-year-old woman arrested on suspicion of killing her roommate last week was released from Orange County Jail today because of insufficient evidence, police said.
Kathleen Straits, who was scheduled for hip surgery, was arrested Thursday after the body of a 56-year-old man was found in the apartment they shared in the 1400 block of West North Street. Michael Williams, a machinist who recently lost his job, died of a gunshot wound, police said.
The pair had decided to be roommates about six months ago to share expenses. Neighbors said they believe Straits was defending herself against Williams, who allegedly abused her physically and emotionally.
Anaheim police said they will continue their investigation into the shooting.
