Making Cents: An Index of Funds’ Popularity

The rapidly expanding Vanguard Index 500 Trust is closing in on the heels of Investment Company of America for the spot as the second-largest mutual fund, as both grow over $30 billion in assets. The leader remains $53-billion-plus Fidelity Magellan, which has been shrinking lately. The move illustrates the popularity of index funds--Vanguard Index has 68% more money now than on Jan. 1.
