FDA Asks Court to Allow Tobacco Rules

The Food and Drug Administration asked a federal court in Greensboro to turn down a tobacco industry request that tough new tobacco regulations be blocked. The Clinton administration stunned the tobacco industry in August by giving the FDA extensive new regulatory powers over cigarettes in a bid to curb smoking among children. The agency said in a court filing that its restrictions on tobacco billboards, vending machines and sports advertisements are consistent with the federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act.
