AIDS Watch

Showing that no community can escape the modern-day scourge, new health statistics reveal a larger-than-expected number of AIDS cases in Moorpark, Simi Valley and Thousand Oaks (B1). . . . Concerned by the new figures, the county’s health officials are considering three locations in east Ventura County to open a special clinic for AIDS/HIV patients.
Computer Crash
A balky new computer system is delaying child-support payments to hundreds of single parents across the county, threatening them with a cash crunch right before Christmas (B1). . . . The district attorney’s office has swung into high gear to work out the bugs of the new automated child-support system.
On Guard
Martin McKinney says he has one of the best views in the Conejo Valley. As caretaker of the former Thousand Oaks Civic Center at 401 W. Hillcrest Drive, McKinney overlooks much of Newbury Park (B1). . . . The city hired him in April to safeguard the vacant complex from squatters and graffiti vandals.
Still Split
After months of wrangling over upgrading the Hill Canyon sewage plant, the Thousand Oaks City Council remains divided on the most equitable way to split the costs of improvements among current and future residents (B1). . . . The five city leaders are now considering an interim solution, and a $2.50 monthly sewer fee increase that they hope will meet state requirements and keep the sewage treatment plant operating.
