Lawrence Stops the Show

CANYON COUNTRY — Kevin Lawrence never figured that his slam dunks could stop games.
The Moorpark High forward, who led the Musketeers to a 67-55 nonleague victory over host Canyon on Friday night, now knows otherwise.
With the score tied, 38-38, and about three minutes to go in the third quarter, Lawrence dunked an alley-oop pass from Ryan Hogan.
The referee stopped the clock a moment later and asked Lawrence to adjust the sagging rim.
“I was excited to get a few dunks, you know?” said Lawrence, who scored 29 points. “I tried to have an all-around game, to keep myself in it.”
That dunk did more than keep Moorpark (11-5) in the game--it put the Musketeers ahead for good.
Moorpark, playing without injured starter Andrew Carlson, took a 40-38 lead on Lawrence’s slam. They led, 44-40, after three quarters.
Lawrence opened the fourth quarter with a jam and a jumper for 48-40 edge, Moorpark’s biggest lead. Several turnovers helped sink the Cowboys (7-5).
