SAN CLEMENTE — Three days after a San Clemente man was fatally shot and robbed in Riverside, a 17-year-old boy was arrested in connection with the crimes, police said Saturday.
Richard Sutcliff, 57, was shot to death and stripped of his vehicle and credit cards on the night of Jan. 1 in the 3200 block of Trade Center, a small street in Riverside. Police found his body in a parking lot about 10:50 p.m. when they responded to an emergency call, Riverside Police Officer Roger Sutton said.
On Friday, Riverside police spotted Sutcliff’s vehicle near the Pomona Freeway and University Avenue. The teen suspect and another person were inside the vehicle and taken to the police station, Sutton said.
After interviews and further investigations, detectives said they found more links between the teenager and the Sutcliff case.
The teen allegedly used the victim’s credit cards and vehicle to shop at several stores in Moreno Valley, Rialto and Fontana, officials said.
The second person was not linked to the homicide, but was arrested on a San Bernardino County warrant for spousal abuse, Riverside police said.
It remained unclear Saturday why Sutcliff was in Riverside on the day he was killed. The investigation is continuing, Sutton said.
Sutcliff’s relatives in Tustin declined comment Saturday.
