* Re “Prejudice Called the Main Cause of Housing Segregation,” Dec. 23:
Since the article focused on the effects of segregation, there was no mention that people who experience housing discrimination do have recourse under federal and state housing laws, including the recovery of monetary damages for the most egregious cases of discrimination.
In addition to race and national origin, people are protected from arbitrary discrimination and from discrimination on the basis of religion, age, gender, disability, familial status, marital status and sexual orientation.
There are four fair housing councils in the Los Angeles area that take discrimination complaints: the Fair Housing Council of San Fernando Valley, the Fair Housing Council of San Gabriel Valley, the Fair Housing Foundation and the Westside Fair Housing Council. Or our Fair Housing Hotline (1-800-477-5977) will refer callers to the appropriate agency.
