Pruning Roses

All roses need pruning in winter while they are dormant, and the best way to learn is to watch someone else. Fortunately, there are a number of demonstrations given in the Southland:
Los Angeles County
Today from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.: The Glendale Rose Pruning and Garden Show, with pruning demonstrations at the Glendale Civic Auditorium, 1401 N. Verdugo Road, Glendale, (818) 548-2147. There are also classes on fruit trees, vegetables and composting, plus 60 displays and vendors. Admission: adults $3, children free.
Today from at 1 p.m.: South Coast Botanic Garden, 26300 Crenshaw Blvd., Palos Verdes Peninsula, (310) 544-1948. Free with admission: $5, adults; $3, seniors and students; $1, children.
Jan. 13 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.: A hands-on class on how to prune specialty roses, including climbers and ramblers, old and shrub, at the Arboretum of Los Angeles County, 301 N. Baldwin Ave., Arcadia. Bring sharp, clean shears. Cost: $13 with reservations required by calling (818) 447-8207.
Jan. 18 at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.: Huntington Botanical Gardens, 1151 Oxford Road, San Marino, (818) 405-2141. Free with admission: $7.50, adults; $6, seniors, $4 students and children.
Jan. 25, from 10 a.m.-noon: Class on “The Care and Pruning of Roses” at Cal Poly Pomona. Reservations: call (909) 869-2084. Cost: $15.

Saturday, Jan. 11 and Jan. 12 from 1 to 3 p.m.: Westminster Civic Center Rose Garden, 8200 Westminster Blvd., Westminster. Free.
