Santa Monica this week announced $41,000 in arts grants to increase public access to cultural programs.
The Santa Monica Arts Commission issued the grants, ranging from $1,000 to $5,000, that will help produce 14 programs--from creation of museum installations to woodworking workshops, said Hamp Simmons, administrative analyst for the Cultural Affairs Division. Four of the grants were given to programs targeting the Latino community.
The commission also announced a $14,000 state grant to the Cultural Affairs Division to create an arts education curriculum with the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District.
“It’s a way of making arts programming a more integral part of the Santa Monica school curriculum,” Simmons said.
Karen Atkinson, director of Side Street Projects, said the $3,000 grant her nonprofit group received will help install woodworking stations in renovated school buses that will travel to schools.
The Santa Monica Museum of Art will use its $5,000 grant to fund three art installations, said museum director Tom Rhoads.
