A 33-year-old Costa Mesa man was in custody Friday in connection with a confrontation that left one man dead and another hospitalized with stab wounds, police said.
Daniel Ray Quinn was held at the Newport Beach City Jail. He told police that he and Ryan Calvin Kerr, 25, of Newport Beach had gone to the home of Jonathon Edward Pavese, 26, to confront him about the alleged sexual assault of a female friend, police said.
In the confrontation, Pavese was stabbed and he shot Kerr, Police Sgt. John Desmond said.
Kerr and Quinn ran, but Kerr collapsed about 100 yards from the home in the 200 block of 21st Street and died an hour later at Western Medical Center-Santa Ana.
Pavese remained hospitalized Friday in guarded condition at UCI Medical Center in Orange. Quinn, who turned himself into police, was booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, police said. Bail was set at $50,000.
Investigators will follow up on the alleged sexual assault that led to the confrontation, Desmond said.
