Red card: The girls’ soccer teams at Van Nuys and Cleveland high schools have been placed on probation through the end of the 1997-98 season for conducting an illegal scrimmage, City Section Commissioner Barbara Fiege said.
In addition, each team will be allowed to schedule only one preseason practice match next season instead of the usual three.
The Wolves, coached by Olumuiyiwa Idowu, and the Cavaliers, coached by Hannys Quilez, held an uhour-long scrimmage at Cleveland on Nov. 27.
Fiege said further violations by either program could result in sanctions against the teams, coaches or the athletic departments at the schools.
The Van Nuys athletic department is on a year’s probation for violating girls’ volleyball and boys’ soccer section rules.
