Fourth-Ranked Marina Wins Despite Blowing Four-Goal Lead

Fourth-ranked Marina held on after squandering a 4-0 lead against No. 10 Esperanza, to win, 5-4, in Sunset League girls’ water polo Tuesday at Esperanza High.

Jenny Lamb scored two goals for the Vikings, who improved to 9-3, 5-1 in league. Esperanza is 9-6, 4-2.

In Century League water polo:

Villa Park 8, Foothill 3--Kristyn Pulver and Morgan Meyer each had three goals for third-ranked Villa Park (14-2, 4-0). Goalie Brandie Seligman recorded a season-high 13 saves for the Spartans. Lisa Helm, Jackie Pirro and Jennie Adams scored for ninth-ranked Foothill (9-7, 2-2).

In the Empire League:

Katella 11, Loara 4--Josie Hoien and Devon Wright each scored four goals for Katella (8-7, 3-1), which had six goals in the fourth quarter.

In nonleague water polo:

Newport Harbor 15, Costa Mesa 7--Junior Alten Moore scored a season-high nine goals for host Newport Harbor (12-5), which is seventh-ranked.

In Olympic League boys’ soccer:

Orange Lutheran 2, Ontario Christian 1--Josh Nelson scored thewinning goal in the 61st minute of the game. Mike Byard also scored for Orange Lutheran (13-2-2, 6-0-1).

In the Century League girls’ soccer:

Canyon 5, Santa Ana Valley 0--Rochelle Locke and Kristen Thompson each scored two goals for Canyon (3-3). Paulette Seaman had two saves in a shutout for the Comanches.

Villa Park 2, Foothill 1--Lori Sheppard scored with 20 minutes left in the second half for Villa Park (11-6-1, 3-2-1). Leah Sims also had a goal for Villa Park.

In the Empire League:

Cypress 4, Century 0--Michelle Woienberghe, Tiffany Dinoso, Jodie Specht and Dusty Creager each for Cypress (14-3-2, 5-0). Maria Torres made 14 saves for Century (2-10-4, 0-4-1).

Kennedy 1, El Dorado 0--Michelle Maitland scored the winner in the second half. Jihan Elgazzar had nine saves for Kennedy (13-5, 4-1).

In the Freeway League:

La Habra 2, Fullerton 0--Sara Brown scored in the first half and Kelley Karaba added her goal in the second for host La Habra (8-8-1, 4-1).

Sunny Hills 2, Buena Park 0--Jill Wilson and Liz Main both scored second-half goals for Sunny Hills (11-5-3, 4-1) to break a scoreless halftime tie. Valerie Vanderwest made 10 saves for Buena Park (6-4-3, 0-3-2).

Troy 1, Sonora 0--Lori Judd scored 25 minutes into the second half for Troy ((10-5-3, 2-2-1).

In the Orange League:

Valencia 4, Magnolia 0--Lauren Jacobs scored in the 57th and 62nd minutes for Valencia (9-2-4, 4-1). Alejandra Nunez also scored in the 79th minute and assisted on Jacobs’ second goal. Magnolia is 3-11-1, 1-3-1.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Laguna Hills 1, Aliso Niguel 0--Andrea Kosciuk scored the game-winner in the 67th minute off a crossed pass from Vanessa Gillis for eighth-ranked Laguna Hills (13-6, 5-0). Goalie Kirsten Roy had 10 saves for Aliso Niguel (5-8-1, 2-2-1).

University 4, Estancia 1--Kaley Pickett scored two goals in a victory for University (8-5-1, 3-2-1).

In the South Coast League:

Mission Viejo 4, Trabuco Hills 0--Kate Desmond scored two goals and Whitney Fitzpatrick and Jen Mescher had one each for fifth-ranked Mission Viejo (13-3-4, 2-1-2).
