Point Mugu Park to Honor Caretaker
Point Mugu State Park will host a memorial celebration and hike in La Jolla Canyon on Saturday to honor the state’s first campground host, Ray Miller.
The event will highlight Miller’s career at the park as well as the work camp hosts perform for the state.
Miller, appointed in 1979, was the first official California Park Service campground host. His appointment as campground caretaker began the widespread use of hosts throughout the state.
Miller died at his post at the La Jolla Hike-In Camp in 1989 after serving more than 10 years.
A memorial plaque will be dedicated to Miller and additional events are scheduled. For information on the 1 p.m. event, call Ranger Tom Evans at 488-1827.
