Buena Freshman Settles the Score Again

Buena High girls’ soccer player J.J. Toohey has taken a liking to the Southern Section playoffs.
Toohey, a freshman midfielder, again was the difference for the Bulldogs, scoring in a 1-0 victory over cross-town rival Ventura in a Southern Section Division II second-round match Tuesday at Ventura College.
Buena (20-2-4) will play St. Lucy’s, a 2-1 winner over Santa Barbara, in the quarterfinals Thursday.
Toohey scored her 14th goal on a pass from Melissa Sanchez in the 23rd minute. She scored both goals in the Bulldogs’ 2-0 first-round victory over Valencia.
Ventura finished 18-6-3.
In other Southern Section second-round matches:
Thousand Oaks 3, Peninsula 2--Susan Shivokevich scored in sudden-death overtime on a free kick to give the host Lancers (15-7-2) a Division I upset of the fourth-seeded Panthers.
Shivokevich’s goal came in the 110th minute. Alia Khan scored twice for Thousand Oaks.
Hart 5, Simi Valley 1--Mandy Stupar scored twice to lead the Indians (22-1-2) past the Pioneers (14-6-3) in a Division II match at Hart.
Chaminade 2, Rosary 1--Liz Buhn scored the winning goal for the Eagles (20-3-3) with two minutes to play in a Division III match at Cal State Fullerton.
Paraclete 1, La Reina 0--Margo Horner scored a minute into the second half, lifting the host Spirits (17-2-5) past the Regents (19-5-2) in a Division IV match.
St. Bonaventure 2, Oak Park 1--Jennifer Griffith scored on a direct kick in the second half, lifting the Seraphs (20-3-1) past the Eagles (13-9-5) in a Division IV match at Oak Park.
BOYS
Bell Gardens 4, Simi Valley 1--The Pioneers (21-5-3) fell in a Division I match at Bell Gardens (20-1-1).
Buena 1, Mira Costa 1--Rueben Bates and Shaun Strople converted the decisive kicks in a shootout, advancing the Bulldogs (16-3-5) in a Division II match at Mira Costa.
Moorpark 3, El Monte 1--Daniel Valdez scored to forge a 1-1 first-half tie and Hugo Ramirez and Juan Amecuza scored in overtime for the Musketeers (20-5-1) in a Division III match at El Monte.
Crespi 1, Santa Ynez 0--Francisco Espinoza scored in the fifth minute of overtime for the Celts (15-6-2) in a Division IV defeat of the Pirates (14-3-4) at Crespi.
Poly 2, Grant 1--Juan Vega scored two second-half goals, including the winner with 10 minutes to play, lifting the Parrots (11-1-4) past the Lancers (12-6-6) in a City Section second-round match at Poly.
