HUNTINGTON BEACH — A woman from Colombia on an early morning walk with her husband was fatally injured Sunday morning when a motorist plowed into her after failing to obey a sign at a three-way stop, police said.
Marila Alvarado Lenis, 42, died at UCI Medical Center in Orange at 2:45 p.m., nearly seven hours after the accident.
Lenis, who police said was visiting a resident of Mistral Drive in Huntington Harbour, was walking along Saybrook Lane near its junction with Heil Avenue when struck by a Ford Aerostar van.
The van was driven by Walter Fern Sythoff, 42, of Moreno Valley, Police Lt. Bruce Kelly said.
The 1990 van jumped the curb before striking Lenis, who was pushed through a block wall fence, Kelly said.
Lenis’ husband, who was walking in front of her, was not touched by the vehicle or any debris, Kelly said.
Kelly said Sythoff was not arrested, and an investigation is continuing.
