Broadcast journalist Laura Diaz will discuss women in the media at Mission College on Tuesday as part of the ongoing lecture series “Minorities in American Culture.”
Diaz, an anchorwoman for KABC-TV in Los Angeles, will be the sixth speaker in a series that focuses on personal and professional success stories.
Diaz, who grew up in Santa Clarita, became the first Latina to anchor a main broadcast at KABC in 1988. She has won an Emmy award for science and environmental reporting and a 1992 Los Angeles Press Club award for her spot reporting of the Los Angeles riots. In 1993, she was named woman of the year by the Mexican-American Opportunity Foundation.
“She will speak about being a woman of color in society, and particularly of being a woman of color in the media,” said Mission philosophy professor Larry Andre. “It brings a focal point to the students that’s really needed.”
Andre said Diaz’s appearance will be the first of several events on the campus to recognize Woman’s History Month, which is celebrated in March.
The lecture, which is free to the public, will begin at 7 p.m. in the Campus Center, 13356 Eldridge Ave., Sylmar.
