IRVINE — A 53-year-old man was killed early Sunday and two other people seriously injured in a head-on collision on Laguna Canyon Road about a mile south of the San Diego Freeway, police said.
The man, who was identified by coroner officials as Vaughan Bigalow of Irvine, was driving a 1993 Jeep Cherokee and apparently weaving through traffic on the winding road just before the 12:30 a.m. crash, according to Irvine Police Sgt. Timothy Smith.
The Cherokee was northbound and apparently passing in the southbound lane when it crashed into a Honda Accord, injuring the driver and passenger.
The man and woman in the Accord, who were not identified, had “serious injuries,” but were “conscious and talking” on the way to Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center, Smith said.
The driver of the Cherokee was thrown from his vehicle and suffered head and neck injuries, and died shortly after arriving at Western Medical Center-Santa Ana, Smith said.
