FIRST HALF IN REVIEW

Steve Lavin’s coaching debut in the Sweet 16 got off to a slow start as the Bruins never got into a groove. Defensively, their biggest problem was the hot hand of Iowa State guard Dedric Willoughby, who made five three-point baskets and finished the first half with 16 points. Willoughby was fouled while making one of his three-point shots and converted a rare four-point play. Forward Kenny Pratt also provided headaches for UCLA, battling inside for 10 points. Offensively things weren’t any better for UCLA, which shot only 37% from the field. Its 25 points also were a season low for a half. Charles O’Bannon led the team with seven points. The expected battle of centers between 6-foot-11 Kelvin Cato of Iowa State and 6-9 1/2 Jelani McCoy never materialized. Cato was rarely heard from, his main contribution a dunk off an alley-oop late in the first half. McCoy had two baskets for four points. The Cyclones led from start to finish, holding several double-digit leads.

* OTHER STUFF: J.R. Henderson showed his frustration several times, especially after his only basket of the half was called back because of an offensive foul. He scored one point on a free throw. UCLA had a 6-0 run midway through the half that helped things from getting embarrassing.

* IOWA STATE’S LEADING SCORERS: Willoughby 16, Pratt 10.

* OTHER STUFF: Local fans might remember forward Shawn Bankhead, who scored one of the first baskets of the game. Bankhead attended Cleveland High in Reseda.

SECOND HALF/OVERTIME IN REVIEW

Dollar’s driving layup with 1.9 seconds remaining in overtime gave UCLA the victory and had the Bruin faithful reminiscing about a similar play Tyus Edney made in one-point victory over Missouri in the second round of the tournament two years ago. The 5-11 Dollar was the key late in the second half. His layup with two minutes remaining gave UCLA a 62-61 lead. He extended the margin to 64-61 with a baseline jumper with 37 seconds remaining. Willoughby, who was less effective from long range in the second half, made his eighth three-pointer moments later to tie the game at 64-64. Dollar was driving for the winning basket when he was called for traveling with seconds remaining. Earlier in the half, Dollar helped UCLA get back in the game by making a pair of three-pointers in a 10-0 run that pulled the Bruins to within 46-40. O’Bannon gave UCLA its first lead of the game with 6:52 to play on a 15-foot jumper to make the score 53-52. The Bruins scored the first four points in overtime but then watched their lead evaporate in the final minute. A free throw by Pratt and an basket by Bankhead put the Cyclones ahead, 73-72, with 11 seconds remaining. That’s when Dollar went to work.

* OTHER STUFF: UCLA shot much better in the second half, finishing the game by making 47% from the floor and six of 17 three-point shots.

* OTHER STUFF: Willoughby finished with 34 points, making eight of 17 three-point shots. It may not have looked like it, but Iowa State was outrebounded, 36-27. Pratt had eight turnovers.
