High School Free-Throw Rule Reinstated

A 1981 rule that prohibits high school basketball players standing along the lane during a free throw from moving until the ball hits the backboard or rim has been restored by the National Federation Basketball Rules Committee and will be in effect next season.

Previously, player movement was allowed as soon as the ball was released. The change is designed to minimize rough play, according to the rules committee.

The committee, which is based in Kansas City, Mo., also made it against the rules for players to lock arms or grab teammates to keep an opponent from moving.

Additionally, the committee exempted warm-up clothing from a rule that restricts the size of manufacturers’ logos on uniforms to 1 1/2 by 1 1/2 inches. And it added illegal pants to the list of uniform items that will result in a technical foul.
