Two Men Found Shot on Balcony

SANTA ANA — Two men were shot in the head, one fatally, on the balcony of an apartment Friday.
Officers found the bodies of Francisco de la Cruz, 26, and Gabriel Mendez, 18, at 12:45 a.m., Lt. Ken Hall said. They were lying on the balcony of Cruz’s Broadway Villa apartment, 806 S. Broadway, Hall said.
Mendez lives at a different address in the 800 block of East St. Andrews Place.
Cruz died at the scene. Mendez of Santa Ana was in critical condition Friday at a local hospital, Hall said.
Police discovered a semiautomatic handgun at the scene, which they believe was used in the killing, Hall said. Police are investigating possible motives, including an attempted murder-suicide.
