Suicide Seems Tied to Masters Tickets

AUGUSTA, Ga. — An Augusta man committed suicide, allegedly because he was unable to fulfill ticket orders he had brokered to the Masters golf tournament.
Allen Caldwell, 40, was found dead Friday morning in his Augusta home from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was part-owner of The Clubhouse, an exclusive club across the street from Augusta National Golf Club.
Although details were scarce, Caldwell, functioning as a ticket broker, apparently sold more tickets to the 61st Masters tournament than he was able to obtain. He reportedly could not refund money owed to customers who failed to receive their tickets.
The tournament, which began Thursday, has a reputation as one of the most difficult tickets to acquire in professional sports.
Caldwell’s club for many years had been a restaurant and bar known as The Green Jacket, named after the prize presented to the Masters champion.
