SANTA CLARITA — Sparks from a fireplace ignited a wood shake roof here Sunday, causing more than $250,000 damage to a home, authorities reported.
“That’s why we always tell people, ‘Please don’t have shake roofs,’ ” said Capt. Larry Purefoy of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
The fire, which started at 1:35 p.m in the 27500 block of Trail Ridge Road, caused an estimated $200,000 damage to the home and another $60,000 to its contents, said Christa Tolliver, a fire dispatch supervisor.
Flames erupted on the home’s roof and quickly spread to the attic, Purefoy said. Both were destroyed in the blaze.
By the time firefighters arrived at the home in the rural Sand Canyon area, it was fully involved. It took 25 firefighters about 30 minutes to extinguish the blaze.
No injuries were reported.
