Career Conference for Women Planned

Cal State Northridge will host a career conference this week in an effort to prepare women for the jobs of the future.

The Careers for Women gathering Wednesday will showcase the fastest-growing industries in the Valley: arts and entertainment, entrepreneurship and high technology, said Adele Scheele, director of CSUN’s career center.

“Women need this more than ever,” Scheele said. “The recession cost everybody jobs and was harder hitting for women.”

Corporations are not offering security and not providing the benefits that they did in the past, Scheele said.

Women need to know how to choose a career and advance their prospects in changing times, she added.

“No longer can one person really carry a whole family economically,” she said. “This is an expensive city.”

Speakers will include Sandra Marsh, whose management company represents costume and set designers and producers.

Marsh’s clients have received 50 Academy Award nominations and won 15 Oscars, Scheele said.

Gina Mauriello, manager of network systems and planning for Taco Bell, and Patty DeDominic, founder of PDQ, a company considered a pioneer in temporary personnel services, will also speak.

Sandy Gooch, founder of Mrs. Gooch’s health food stores, will be the luncheon speaker.

The career conference will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Grand Salon of the Student Union, 18111 Nordhoff St., Northridge.

Admission, which includes breakfast and lunch, is $35 for the general public, $25 for CSUN alumni and $10 for CSUN students.
